Welcome to the Home of Court Barn Farm Stud (Est 2004), owned by Lydia.
Court Barn Farm Stud is set in the Southern County of Wiltshire, England. Positioned within the Stourhead Estate, the stud provides the perfect home for breeding, showing and racing top quality horses.
The Stourhead Estate covers a total of 2,650 acres, including the local villages of Gasper, Stourton and Kilmington. Large proportions of the estate are covered with woodland that provides over 50 miles of tracks for use by horses and walkers. Other Land uses include arable farming, many fields of which provide margins for wildlife, the large Stourhead Lake that can been seen from the rear of the Stud New and Old Courts, and the gallops up on Pen Ridge.
The original Stourhead house was owned by the Barons of Stourton who lived on the estate for 700 years before selling it Henry Hoare in 1717. After purchase the Hoare family demolished the original house and built the current Palladian Mansion in its place.
Court Barn Farm Stud gets its name from the original barn that stood in the centre of the Old Court Stables at Stourhead House. When originally built, Old Court Stales surrounded a tradition oak Court Barn, used mainly for storage of the family coaches. Sadly in 1901 the Stourhead house was gutted by fire that soon took hold of Old Court Stables and the Old Court Barn. During this fire two young men living in the groom's flat above the barn were tragically killed, Horses lost and the Coaches destroyed. After the rebuild of Old Court Stables, the family decided not to attempt to save the Barn that was deemed unsalvageable. Instead, the barn was demolished, paved over and a marble plaque dedicated to the young men placed where it once stood.
Now under the management of the English National Trust, Stourhead House and Gardens are open to the general public, but the stables and groom's house still remain. This is the home of the Court Barn Farm Stud.
